CA or SR?

hey guys, which is better for a swap, the CA18DET or the SR20DET, prefrence wise. and im looking for price ranges for both, stock or toyed with.

This has been talked about over and over again. Search the site and you will find many topics regarding the two engines. I’m a fan of the SR personally. only because i know nothing about the CA.

Thats what i thought, do you no any rough price ranges?

autodream does SR swaps in the 4 grand price range the last time i checked. i have no idea about the CA swap.

howww many times does this thread have to be made?..lol
SR FTW!!! haha

ya sorry about that
i was hoping to get some price ranges for the CA and where i can get them

SR20DET is more readily available here in N.A.

For simplicities sake… and for a better engine…go SR20DET.

I own a CA, buy an SR.

SR -1
LT1 +1 !

i wouldn’t say the SR is a better engine, but it does have it’s advantages like not being discontinued. what it boils down to is price, preference and parts availability.

price, the CA is much cheaper. parts for the CA match with the usdm 88 CA18DE pulsar and 87 CA18ET 200SX (turbo). aftermarket is getting slim for the CA. advantage: SR.

now for preference. if you prefer lower end torque, you’ll want to either stroke the CA or buy an SR. if you want a high revving valvetrain, the CA is capable, but not efficient without cams, springs and retainers. same goes for the SR, but add rocker arm stoppers.

i believe the SR comes with a bigger T25 than the CA so in stock form, it’s already looking good, although i’ve raced my friends T28 SR with my nearly stock CA and had 4 really close runs. my car dynoed 160whp/171wft.lbs at the time.

have you thought of an RB? the RB20 is a good platform to start on, and it’s inexpensive as the CA, but nearly the same base power as the SR. the bottom end can accept an rb25 or rb26 crank and rods for a stroked out version of 2.3L or 2.4L, making it quite the sleeper RB.

your friend either doesnt know how to drive or has no traction  because s15 t28 on a CA from the stock turbo is mountains and mountains of difference.

jokes aside, I agree, both engines have advantages and disadvantages and like above poster mentioned, its your preference.

All thought stock ca18 is horrific, you can save an easy large or two by going ca18 and a lightly modded ca (gt-r injectors, z32 maf, s14 t28 with upped boost w/ tuned ECU) is plenty power for drifting, crossing, dragqueening.
