finally someone posted about this, i dont even come here that often anymore because of it
This is one thing that I completely agree with you on this forum, but it baffles me because you don’t even sell that much stuff on here, why are you so adamant about this subject? Believe me I am with you till the end on this matter, just wondering why?
Wow, the Admins/Mods are really trying to buckle down places that were a little crazy, but not really problems.
Between this and the demotion of a well liked moderator, it seems like there are a few guys trying to look tough up top.
Take it from me, we tried some similar tactics at DITB, and all we really did was alienate members. When you make changes that a very vocal majority dislikes, it not for the good of the board.
He probably believes in peoples rights to be allowed to sell shit.
True, this is an OPEN FORUM, like I stated before, just wanna see things go back to normal.
While I am sure there are other options. The fact is simple that the classified users on this board were warned numerous time to keep the shit out of the threads. People continued to post drama and useless personal shit in the threads and the mods decided on the most strict course of action.
The facts are the facts. If you break the rules, you lose certain priveledges. This is exactly what occured.
And honestly I think that while most people are in agreement that the classifieds are not as they should, this would not keep coming up if it wasn’t for your league of sack riders.
Change is inevitable. There are powers that be on this board and therefore it is not a “Free Society” There are rules and regulations that are posted and need to be followed.
The argument of “its a pain in the ass” is not a very good one.
Like I have said before, it all boils down to laziness. If you want to sell something, make a valid attempt at answering all questions as you create or bump the ad. If you want to buy something, click on the designated forum or post a WTB.
I think based on the way this currently are, the addition of a trader feedback/rating tool would make it a well functioning system.
If this would have been your idea to close it down, I wonder how many of the people that dont like the current way would actually like it.
how does it all boil down to laziness? there have been NUMEROUS arguments against the changes that have ZERO to do with being lazy.
And do you honestly think that 80% of the people who voted no voted so because I don’t like it? Why is this even brought up. You just come across as jealous.
Trader feedback will only cover a fraction of the issues that have been brought forth by myself and other board members… Though a lot of those posts have been deleted.
Your arguments that are FOR the changes could also be applied to a BROAD range of solutions. I agree with you that change was needed. Blindly backing a BAD change simply because it is a change is laughable.
quoted for truth, underlined for what i miss the most.
this is why an open forum works better than a craigslist type classified section. knowledgeable people helping each other out/flaming when it is necessary.
It boils down to laziness because you dont want to go looking in the proper classifieds section for something that might interest you. You want it to be on “new posts” to make it easier for you.
You dont want to take the extra time to deal with PM’s.
You cannot deny you have a league of sack riders.
Jealous…not so much.
Also, the moderators went 180 degrees based on the bullshit that was going on. Obviously based on what some of them had they are willing to come back a little bit towards the “old way” But I would put good $ on the same drama filled BS coming back if it gets remotely close to the original way.
I honestly think the new systems works to create a drama free market place. Noone is going to PM you and tell you that your car is way overpriced or that part is cheaper on Ebay.
Because this particular community can’t seem to get itself under control, the moderators have to step in more than they should.
Every other car forum I am on has zero drama in classifies, partially because the people are more respectful, more adult in their dealings and the moderators simply ban everyone that doesnt comply.
Is that would you would like? To have bans handed out for everything that goes askew in classifieds?
I havent read the whole thread but what is your Ideal Solution Christian?
Yes.
Every forum I’ve been on from 4 wheelers, car audio, home theater, cars, cell phones, etc…
The community polices itself for the most part. When someone is overboard & reckless, they get a 1 week - 1 month ban. Or, specifically have their access to the classifieds section removed. And these penalties are rarely needed, refer to self-moderation.
Of course, some of these boards have been around since 2000, some have 1k active users where as others have closer to 10k.
Hell, look @ ot.net, 100k active users, and their classifieds are pretty self-sufficient.
But from reading, I gather that we’re all along for the ride.
I see your join date/post count. So have you been witness to how out of hand they really were?
I understand other boards work well and this one had the exact same opportunity to function “normally” It didnt happen. Changes were made based on the fact that it could NOT function with self policing. The mods had to work overtime to clean shit up and hand out bans.
People who get banned for something like this, tend to come back, and act the same.
:lightbulb:
Maybe we should have a 3 strikes rule with bans in classifieds
Maybe we should have to have a certain post count to use classifieds.
Maybe as I have suggested, we need a specific classifieds form to post.
Those would all make it an easier format and perhaps give it a chance to go back to a discussion style forum.
well. something that would appease both parties is the ability to have your thread in either form. If you wanted to sell something in a locked post, then lock the post in the beginning. If you want the ability to reply, then choose reply.
Here are som points i’ve made in the past about the deletion of the human dynamic.
SOME threads get out of hand. Some. However, the number of threads with VALID questions that elicit VALID answers, answers to questions that i may have never thought of, far outnumbers them.
Another example. When i was selling my elise, people cross posted it to a number of various forums. Would these people have still done something so thoughtful if they were not going to be able to be globally recognized for doing so? Would they still have sent me a PM saying “hey, i posted this on XXXX.org for you” if everyone else on the site wouldn’t know that they did such a nice thing? In a perfect world, of course. But this is NYSpeed. People like being involved with things, especially online.
Chitchat helps sell things - bottom line. It gets people excited and interested.
People want something more if they think other people are interested. It’s a human instinct that i like to take advantage of when i sell something. It’s not going to work if i post in my thread “PS: (xxxx, yyy and zzzz all are interested in this item)”.
This is why selling things on a message board is far superior to selling something on craigslist, because it’s far more dynamic and interactive.
I have presented the negatives of taking the human dynamic out of the sales equation. You (or anyone for that matter) have yet to explain to me why this is less important than policing a FEW classified posts that become tangential and erroneous.
I’m not disagreeing with your viewpoint at all. I just don’t think that the new system is the worst thing on the planet. I just see the path the forum took to get to this point.
While I think the old way may have been more productive in selling items and creating a “buzz” about certain items, the community did NOT follow the rules and actions were taking as a result of that. As “over the top” as most people seem to think they are.
Its like when you do something wrong for so long and it gets let go, it becomes a habit. This forum has some very bad habits that need to be broken. Maybe this cold turkey approach will work and people will realize the value of a “proper” discussion in a classifieds thread.
Maybe the end result of this whole thing will be that people appreciate the freedom they have had on this board.
No one has to be here. A board is defined by its members, and if someone doesn’t like a board, they will simply stop posting. No one is ever going to think “Wow thank god this board lets me _____, my life has been made complete with my newfound freedoms!”
Truths:
The mods and admins of a board own the board, they can do whatever they want with it. The saying ‘If you dont like it, leave’ applies. However for this reason poor decisions by the staff of a board will cause membership/participation to decline. A forum with no activity is just another useless website. See ubrf -> nyspeed
Successful forums cater to their members, not overmoderate them with silly rules. I dont think this whole classifieds thing is a huge deal, but I do think that its a bad decision, and unfortunately takes a lot away from the ability to buy/sell here.
I don’t see how its funny when its partially true. The freedom to self moderate and excercise self control existed. Members chose to get out of hand and push the envelope. The freedoms they had get taken away resulting in 15 threads of bitching about the lack of freedoms they once had.
I aint complaining.
But i was able to sell more stuff when peolple where posting in my threads.
Now i cant really sell anything.
But i am getting used to it.
I realize my opinion doesnt mean shit to “the cool guys”, so i’ll keep it to myself…
But man some of you are fucking ladies.
i agree with everyone here who doesnt like it for the reasons they have suggested.
in fact, i would like to have some of the admin on SON approved on NYspeed to read this thread.
think we can do that?
Also when someone says “I don’t know just make an offer I want it gone”, how am I to low ball or one up the low baller?
Take it to PM’s and be like uhh $1, and then get laughed at because the bidding is already at $14… such a travesty.
I am not on 1 other forum besides this one that has a locked down classifieds because who the hell cares really.
Shit I think speedped and diablo go offtopic more often in Gen Auto than anybody ever has in classifieds, maybe Gen Auto should be under the same lame setup. My .02
