Hot rod e-test paper.

trying to get a hot rod e-test paper for my SR 240. one nissan dealer near me wants $40 plus tax, the other wants $50 plus tax. for a someone to look at it and say “that’s so jdm tyte yo!” and print off a peice of paper. ridiculous.

friend of mine with the same swap got his letter for free last summer.

when you guys got your letter did you have to pay? if not then where did you go? also do you absolutely have to get it from the dealer or are there other places to get it?

thanks.

take it to a small shop.

the emission tech is not suppose to charge you extra to run it as a hot rod.

when they do the test, the computer will pop up and ask “run as hot rod yes or no”

all they have to do is click yes. so basically they don’t need any extra documents from you.

in a way, they can run any car under hot rod with no reasons, and it will go through as normal.

this is according to my friend who works at a emission shop and they do a lot of rhd and engine swapped vehicles

Can you PM or post the contact info for this shop please?

the point is that some shops want physical evidence of hot rod status

usually this is in the form of a letter, either from nissan, but could be from another shop

it depends on the standard of proof required by the shop you are testing at. some will want a dealer letter, some will want a letter from another mechanic, some will do it if they themselves happen to know it’s a swap

in any case, they need to be convinced that it’s a hot rod and if the guy doesn’t know nissans, you saying “trust me” isn’t gonna cut it. (well, with some shady places sometimes it will!)

at canadian tire, for example, the shop foreman wanted a letter from a nissan dealer, even though the swap was obvious. it’s a form of covering his ass in case MOE does an audit… that way he has a paper trail to show them.

woodchester nissan in 'sauga did a letter for me and fobwall last summer stating the car had an engine that was not available in that car for that year. i just asked the service manager and he hooked me up. i dunno if he would do it again.

40 bucks for a letter isnt the end of the world. you can also keep a copy in your car in case you get pwnt by a roadside check. or you can fake your own. or you can go to a shop that requires a lower standard of proof.

I know a guy who owns/runs a etest facility and they require proof from the dealer. They will not take anything from some random shop.

Brendan… Goto Waterloo Nissan and talk to the chick behind the parts counter. She gave me my letter/proof for free and was actually pretty nice about it all.

thanks jeff, i’ll try there again next week, when did you get yours done? i talked to the service manager at both places, both guys gave off the dickhead vibe pretty strong… so did the parts chick at greg vann (cambridge)

just register your car at an address way the fuck up north, and ur real address as ur mailing address so theres 2 on ur ownership. i think sudburry+ is exempt. dont quote me but somewhere up north ontario they are exempt from emmissions testing 100% for sure. just go into mto pay the 5 or 10 buck for address change look up on mapquest a street name in the city u want and change it over. then if u get snagged by mto all u do is show them ur ownership, tell them ur exempt, and they say “have a nice day,… next!”

yup no etest up north sudbury or north bay

walkerton doesn’t have them either, i’d like to do that but it just seems too shady when your ownership says an address that isn’t written on anything else that you own.

you don’t need to test the car as a hot rod a sr will pass with normal status. you are all just too lazy and cheap to go about it the right way. I’m an emission inspector and i will not test anything as a hot rod unless it really is and your cars do not meet the requirement.

uhh… why don’t you explain to us how our cars do not meet the requirement?

because last time i checked, the sr20de(t) or ca18de(t) were never available in a 240sx in any model year

The retard and master mechanic told me he doesnt know how to do it lol. I’m heading to another place soon though. This is in a 180 so i dunno how u guys do it if u just have a swap

i got mine the last two times from kitchener nissan… i just walked in and talked to some guy in an office at the back. he came out and wrote up the paper for free. I called waterloo nissan and they were real pricks about it. they wanted all this information from me. i suggest kitchener nissan. The etest facility needs a different letter every year you get it tested.

Yes an SR will pass under KA standards but saying people are to lazy and cheap to about it right is just stupid. All you need to pass as a KA is a proper Cat. Having a race cat or a super high flow cat will not do 1/2 as much for emissions hence why the nox is higher, hence why a hotrod standard is required.

Further more, I understand what you mean about testing them as hotrods since an SR is a 2.0 and a KA is 2.4. Technically it doesnt qualify because you’ve lowered displacement instead of raising it but as spd-dmn pointed out, neither the CA18DET or SR20DET were sold in north america but are offered as factory replacement engines for the 240sx so technically must be tested as a hotrod since you legally cannot test a 2.0L engine as a 2.4L.

But as an emissions inspector, you already knew that right.

Move to Bruce County. We don’t need etest… “yet”. (except for commercial vehicles) But there are a few beaters on the road here I wish would be taken off.

I have never been asked for proof that my car does not have the original motor in it to be tested as a hotrod. Unfortunatly, it would not be worth the hassle for you to drive to st. thomas to get your car etested.

perfect, i’ll try there. when was the last time you got one from them?

it is regardless as to what country the engine came from what was a 240 called in japan and was an sr not the standard engine therefore it was an available engine in that platform in that model year

ca and sr were never available in the platform of a “240sx”, in japan there is 180sx and 200sx acording to displacement, thats why its called a 240sx in canada/us, because its 2.4L, same as the 300zx-vg30dett 3.0L, or the 350z-vq35de 3.5L;

so the 1.8L ca18de(t) and the 2.0L sr20de(t) were never available in any years of any can/usdm “240sx”

wrong, sorry.

i’ve read the legislation and i’ve flipped through the hard copy reference book.

it doesn’t say a damn thing about what country anything is from and it definitely doesn’t say anything about platforms. it goes by model.

a hotrod is defined as a vehicle that has installed in it a motor that was not available in that model for that model year.

A 240SX is a different model than a Silvia or a 180SX. You could not get an SR20 in a 240SX ever. Therefore a 240SX with an SR is a hotrod for emission testing purposes.
