Well I’m not so stuck on price since I’ve spent $2,200 to build my computer in 07 and then another $500 a few months ago to update the chip, memory, and HDD.
Regardless, didn’t mean to start a Mac vs PC debate in here…
Marisa, if you want a Mac, get one. But you’re better off doing what I suggested. If you want a new laptop regardless, get an HP or a Dell. Windows 7 is worth getting on it. It’s not crappy like Windows Vista.
Yeah, that is a downside of owning one, that if you need something such as a power cord, its $80 for a replacement, I JUST replaced mine like 3 weeks ago. I’m looking for an external CD drive and Mac doesn’t make one for any other computer except the MacBook Air. Its a problem because You can’t just go and get a universal one, it HAS to have the system requirements for the OS x also.
I have an iMac, a MacBook and a Dell 10v netbook. I don’t have any problems with any of them. Although the netbook is only a month old. Everyone always harps about how windows is fine except you have to maintain it with constant spyware removal and virus checks and windows updates every 2 days. That’s fine, if you want to do that. (Which I have already encountered on my new netbook. I’ve had the iMac for 2 years, literally never had a problem. I’m not a PC gamer either, so no issue there. The graphics and monitor are the best I’ve seen yet. I use it as my television. The MacBook I bought used earlier this year, tossed it around a bit, my girlfriend is currently using it. No problems there. She is a very base level computer user. One very helpful thing is the Apple store located in Albany. There are a load of people who work there that are very knowledgeable and helpful with their products. Which, when i switched from Microsoft based PC’s was very helpful.
All in all, I feel like Apples products, specifically their OS and the base hardware is much higher quality than most PC stuff. It’s probably due to the fact that they don’t use 3rd parties in their products. They select and build everything.
The only gripe I have about macs is their price and their lack of user serviceablity. (well, at least that they want you to know about)
Marisa just get what you want, everyone will have their own opinion on which is better, it truly doesn’t matter what anyone on here thinks, it’s going to be your computer and you will be buying it with your money, so unless someone on here is willing to give you money towards your purchase then asking for advice on here was a really bad idea!
Pretty much. But take an IT guys opinion. It’s not hard to run a program once a month to keep your PC clean. You’ll save money in the long run, and be able to do just as much.
Too each his own.
Both have their benefits and con’s. Just like any other piece of technology that has a direct competitor (iPhone vs Palm Pre vs Droid, etc.)
It’s okay. If they owned the majority of the market, the shoe would be on the other foot. I look at it this way, your MAC working 100% of the time is great and all…but it doesn’t put food on my family (thanks George Bush). I personally like PC’s because I grew up using them. I also like PC’s because they break, which gives me work, which gives my money, which allows me to live.
Even still that doesn’t really matter. The point isn’t just about the security of them, but of the qualities and advantages to owning and using one. Yeah it’s a plus, but its not the ONLY reason why I got a Mac… The graphics on this computer were what I was going to be working with at school. I was ahead of the game because when doing homework and such I could transfer the files from my laptop to the schools desktop imac with no issue. Others had to spend countless hours in the Mac Computer Lab because the files from the PC to the Imac wouldnt transfer.
There are about 30 million Mac OS X computer users out there… You’re telling me there are no shitbags trying to target all of those people? Even if it is a relatively small number vs total comput users? 30 MILLION PEOPLE?
Everyone has their reasons but, IMHO, spending 2-3X more than a laptop because for a machine that is used for email/browsing because a person can’t figure out how to install AVG is ridiculous.
Macs are used by very few COMPANIES. Which is what attackers want to attack most. Every business you walk into just about, it’s all PC’s. Attackers don’t care as much about Joe Schmoe in his living room. They care about Joe Schmoe at Fortune 500 Company A more than anything.
this whole thread makes me laugh, even the mac owners.
honestly, if you want a mac, buy a macbook if you want to be able to move it around, an imac if you don’t. you don’t need to spend the money on a mac pro, mac mini specs are worse then imacs for the same price unless u get an offbrand monitor, mac airs are gay.
now everyone go back to how pcs are awesome and macs suck even though this thread had nothing to do with that.
I think it’s more than PC > MAC but why spend the big money on it especially when the reason is often user error. That’s like telling a guy that he needs to replace his motor every week when no one told him that he needs to use motor oil instead of water.
Personally, I think for people who have never used a computer before- Macs are great. Very intuitive interface, ergonomically designed.
That being said, if you’re already used to using Windows, well, more than likely you have your fair share of knowledge about how to ‘fix stuff’. “Fixing stuff” on a Windows machine is not the same a on a Mac. The hardware is similar, but the OS is rather different. For people who have made to the point where they liked to ‘tinker’ with Linux , but then became frustrated with alot of the problems most people run into on Linux desktops, well- I’d personally say that those are the people who would really appreciate the Mac OS the most. I found all the ‘usual’ utils that I liked in Linux/unix/bsd on the Mac OS, along with that great interface that ‘just works’.
Now when I say ‘just works’, I’m implying that you are not ‘screwing’ around with stuff when you shouldn’t be. Most people become impatient and ‘screw with stuff’ when they should be just waiting. Yes, suck it up and wait- things will work like they say they should. This is my personal dislike with Windows- security. The default options for most Windows computers allow you to screw up everything, any way you want. Yes, this keeps people employed, and the smart people know what to do with these settings/configurations, but nothing works ‘as intended’ out-of-the-box. It may at first, but then you manage to unknowingly always break it. The software/OS gets mangled, the hardware still runs as it did out of the box, but ‘runs slower’ due to the piles of mangled software, configuration problems, etc., etc., etc. - If you have the knowledge, use your new pc in the most ‘default’ configuration possible- customize little to nothing and store all your relevant data on some other storage (usb drive, thumbdrive, all of the above) and just do a complete ‘restore’ once or twice a year even. You’d be amazed how much ‘faster’ you ‘old’ desktop/laptop runs when there’s not a ton of crap running on it.
That being said, get the cheapest thing that you can tolerate. You’re probably going to need to buy another one in a year anyway; by then it’ll be ‘too slow’…
I appreciate everyones debates…but bottom line I wanted to kow if the ppl that owned them liked them.
You can argue specs all fucking day, I dont care. Just wanted to know overall if people that had macs (Elliot, Centola, Lacey) liked them and what they had.
People like them. They aren’t BAD machines. That’s not what I was trying to say. I just think they are overrated. Like, OMG, he/she has an apple!
Regarless…I suggest you save your money. They are a rip off when it comes to the needs of most people and what they offer for the price. Unless, and only unless, you’re a designer/artist/etc.
I suggest another PC (or fix your current one) and follow the steps in my initial post. It will save you money, and you’ll be fine.
Can someone please give me a legitimate reason why an apple is better for editing photos and video? Any image editing is just manipulating the values of matrices on a very large scale.
And imho I could never own a mac because you could never do anything engineering related with them. There are NO CAD programs for mac’s.
