NYSpeed Track Day #1 - Friday June 15th, 2007

Your car looked good out there. Hopefully next time I can push the Supra a lot harder in the corners and give you a challenge at least

Thanks!! I’ve been looking forward to this event for a while now… I’ve gotten to be a lot better driver since last time I came, and it was nice to see myself actually keeping up with/passing some people, just as a way to see personal improvement. I really don’t give two shits about who I’m faster than…but I do care about getting better each time I go out there. And it’s fun to hear Mike and Dave, who are the two drivers I admire most, tell me I’m doing a good job

i definately need to work on my line on the course. I notice that I drive a lot faster if i’m behind someone I can follow.
Wow that was awesome. Seriously, that guy did not know how to let people pass. I rode his ass for like 5 laps, without the motion to pass. I mean, yea I have a ugly-ass green neon, and he drives a Porsche, but jesus I’m sorry Im faster in the turns buddy…lemme by!

P.S.= I seen alot of people there with cameras, so BY ALL MEANS, POST UP YOUR PICTURES! I am dying to see any green neon footage if possible!

EDIT: Silver, change your sig to # of track days = 2
the green neon was awesome i wish i still had mine. sorta. on to better things for my beater.

the only pictures i have of the neon is in a huge cloud of dust spinning in front of me.

Thanks for sharing!! great camera BTW!! you got some great photos… I currently have a new background on my desktop  good job!!
No problem, I had an awesome time. Photobucket cut down all of those pictures. If anyone wants a full size version just PM me with an email address and file names, or a car description.

Check out pics 31 and 51 in the album linked above. And you may want some stiffer springs for that pig based on that first pic.

I just realized that helmets weren’t required? WTF is up with that?

Dunville doesnt require them but I dont think its a bad idea to wear one if your racing.

no pictures of my car, damn.

And I don’t know how you can drive that hard and not wear a helmet because I am constantly banging my mellon all over the place, although it’s not as bad on a roadcourse compared to autocross.

Yeah, regardless of the rules I was wearing mine and will continue to do so. Debating about signing up for the August event right now.

Over the fact that the track doesnt require helmets? Nürburgring doesnt require helmets either. It’s completely your choice. (But you’re an idiot if you dont IMO).

^^ Probably would have lost an eye last year if it wasn’t for his helmet.

I think you’d be crazy to go out there without one.

Lol… no, not debating signing up over the helmet thing. I wear mine, and if someone wants to risk cracking their melon open that’s their business. Can’t really compare the ring, since that’s Germany and their take on personal responsibility is MUCH different than here in North America. I’m just shocked any track around here would allow no helmets. Hope it doesn’t bite them in the ass because having an inexpensive track like Dunville local is very cool.

I’m debating signing up based on how much wear I put on my tires, and if the Hawk HPS’s I put on Saturday + some better fluid will be enough to take care of my brake issues, or if I need to drop money on powerslots and some serious track pads.

If you are burning up brakes that badly, there is the chance you are over using them. It’s quite common on any car for a novice to burn through brakes faster than normal.

I’m not familiar with the event that you guys set up, but I would suggest spending a little more and going to a larger organized event. Qualified instructors, proper flaggers, proper tech inspections make for a safer and more informative event. I’m not saying your event was bad, but something through PCA/BMW/PDA/Trackmasters/etc. would probably accelerate your learning curve.

I’m not quite sure how I would be over using them. Isn’t the whole point to try to use 100% of your traction at all times? If I was braking late in the front or back straights, after 4 laps my brakes were toast. My options would have been:

 1. Go slower down the straight
 2. Brake earlier
 3. Go faster around turn 1.

Options 1 and 2 was what I went with, and then I could stay out for the full 20 minute session, but it certainly wasn’t the fast way around the track. Most of the people I waved by caught me entering turns, because I was on the brakes early to conserve the brakes.

Option 3 wasn’t really an option, since I was using the entire track and taking the proper line in 1, same for what ever turn was at the end of the back straight.

I think most of the brake problems come from the fact that my car has a lot HP to get the speed up in the straight, a LOT of weight (3750lbs), and it was 100% stock (stock pads, stock fluid, stock rotors). It’s hard to get good brake advice over on the GTO forums, because most of them are only about going fast in a straight line. You tell them you overheated the stock brakes and they look at you like you’re crazy.

How about some ducting to help cool the brakes ? along with better pads/and or rotors. Should do the job.

I wasn’t there, so just guessing, but this may be the reason your brakes didn’t last. Over using the brakes, aka overslowing the car, is typical for a novice. I was guilty my first few events of overslowing the car.

I’m not familiar with the brakes on your car, so they may not be up to the task. But seeing some older track cars with drum brakes leads me to believe that you can learn to deal with almost any brake setup. Having said that, most C5 vette drivers hate their stock brakes because there is just not enough mass there to deal with the amount of heat being generated so quickly.

I’m certainly not a pro, but based on what I’ve heard from some guys who have been to BMWCCA events at the glen I’m probably past the typical novice you see there. I’ve been autocrossing for 4 years now, so I’m pretty good at carrying as much speed as the car will allow through the turns. Aka, if I slow down much less, I’ll be in the weeds.
