Official Running Thread!!!!!!

I have been lazy the rest of the week. Might run later.

LOL!

So my dad gave me a nice set of Vibram Marrell because he bought them a size to small on accident. When I first received them (before I started reading “Born to Run”) I thought to myself there is no way I could ever run in shoes like this. I tried a light jog and they hurt my heels like crazy! So, naturally I went back to my Nikes.

Now the book has a character who runs barefoot. So the thought intrigued me. So today I thought I would give the Vibram’s another shot. So I went on a “6” mile run. In the first mile I started off nice and slow concentrating on every step. I could tell I was slamming my heel on the ground way too hard for these shoes. So I started thinking about the book and the tips they gave for running barefoot and proper form. I monitored my form for the next mile and things felt really weird. My shins were sore (muscles not bone) from the new shorter stride that I was using and my foot was hitting the ground much differently.

After about a mile of running in the “proper” form I found it INCREDIBLY easy to maintain the form and it made my running so much easier. My pace didn’t vary much according to my phone. But I could tell it was much more efficient and more enjoyable. I was only supposed to do 6 but ended up doing 8.27 instead. I think I am in love, maybe eventually I will even lose the shoes all together… who knows!

p.s. This book is AMAZING and if you like running you NEED to read it. It’s fascinating.

‎^ Splits from my run, you can see the pace was increasing then the last mile I cooled down.

I read the same book and gave the NB Minimus (vibram sole) a shot, I loved them as long as I ran in them, still love them, however my back, hips and legs disagreed. I think the biggest issue is that the impact is so much greater, you dont feel it as much in your feet as you do higher up in the body. In years past, I have ran all of my races and the half marathons with regular running shoes, I was always sore after the race for a day or two, but this year I could barely walk after running the half with the Minimus. I saw Cougar starting his 2nd half and I could barely walk. At the end of the day, it is a decent shoe, but I wouldn’t use it on pavement or for super long distance runs, I am still paying for it (herniated disk in my lower back/glute).

On a brighter note, I just went for my 4th run since my 6 week break, hoping to get back in shape to run the Rochester half, anyone else running any upcoming races?

I have heard this from a couple people, but I feel pretty awesome today. I am going for another 8 tonight and probably a 5 or something on Tuesday. We will see how it goes over the next 2 weeks or so! I love these shoes though.

Glad to hear you are back at it. Half marathons are awesome fun!

I want to do the Rochester full or half even but it is looking like I will be at work. :frowning:

3mi yesterday slow pace. about 10:30min/mi

Took the Merrell’s out for a 8 mile last night and a 4 mile this morning. Love these shoes, but I am getting a little bit of a blister on the bottom of my foot just under my big toe. It will toughen up and harden  then never again!

Drew lets go running/biking this week before I go out of town Friday fggt.

Haha. I’m stealing that!

GV give me a call after 3 tomorrow and we can make it happen any day. I am thinking we should do 25mi bike and 6-7 run. My training has been terrible the last few weeks :frowning: Having an ongoing right hip issue which I believe started when I switched to a new style of running shoes. I went for a run Sunday and quit after like a mile.

Post up after you figure out a day/time . Depending on the day, I may be in.

One guy from work said he would be interested as well.

How does tomorrow after work(5:30-6ish) sound to you guys?

Gus, my fiancee, and I run delaware park every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday around 6:30pm. Anyone wanting to do some casual running is welcome to join us. My fiancee needs a running partner.

Pending I am not tied up with some BS I am in for tomorrow.

Ran 17 miles today, hip was bothering me but still finished like a boss.

Ha Thanks, It’s funny because I have been running for like a year now and considered myself pretty fast, but my one friend has been running for a month or so and he averages a 6:15 - 6:30 pace for most distances. I hate him… He is in the mid 19’s on 5k’s (he has only ran 2 ever)… He is an animal!
