I was reading the previous posts, and there’s the arguement of RB vs. 2JZ. If it’s any consellation, when I was pondering on grabbing a 240z there was a site i came across called www.hybridz.org, the best site (to me) for information on 240z’s.
They have full, detalied threads on different swaps: RBswap, 2JZswap, nissan V8 swap, and many other engines.
I read most of them, and I’ll never forget: the guy that did the RB swap ended up saying that for “people who want to swap this motor in, a 2JZ would be a cheaper and easier alternative.”
Everyone knows how reliable Toyota is and if you are going for power (and reliability), a 2JZ sounds like an easier and CHEAPER alternative. Of course I’ve never done it, but ask the people on hybridz.org, they’ll tell you.
Whatever you plan on doing with this Legend, including the engine you plan to put in, I hope everything works out for you.
Ryan, I’ve been a member of Hybridz since '02 Thanks though.
Pyro, dont worry it wont be driven year round, I’m not that cruel. Just another summer car to add to the stable. I have my 5 series Touring and soon an F350 diesel (replacing my jeep) for the winters. The VQ sits MUCH farther back and is almost identical in weight to a fully equipped SR20DET, not to mention it’s the same price. The ONLY benefit to the SR20 is there is a bolt in kit and I wont have to fab up motor mounts. The VQ sits completely behind the strut towers though, there is another guy doing the swap right now and is a bit ahead of me in terms of progress. I’m 100% dead set on a VQ now. The only reason I entertained the idea was possibly picking up an SR from Bing.
I’ll be mounting mine further back as I’ll be modifying the water pipe between the heads to fit “in” the firewall and using a custom intake that enters in the front. Will allow me to mount the engine a full 2" further back. To be perfectly honest I’m not interested in “big” power. 250-300whp is the most I’ll ever want out of this car I suspect. I have the a 35R car, no need for two.
Yes, '94 widebody.

Engine out, stripped the engine bay tonight after that pic was taken. Justin peering into the abyss wondering what the hell I’m thinking with another project car.
Hoping to get the dash out and start working on the wiring and gauges and sanding down the engine bay tomorrow night. Probably moving the car away out of the shop in the coming weeks as I’ve rented 2500+sq/ft with a few friends for the winter and plan on moving my 951 track car and the Datsun there. I will say, it is nice to finish up work for the day and not have to travel to work on one of my projects.
Dude, I’m fucking jealous. You’ve got a garage with a hoist, a stable of like half the list of my dream cars… I must say, congratulations on your success in life.
Keep us posted on this thing, I’m really looking forward to the resto-swap. Nice choice on the VQ, are you gonna try and suck the power out N/A? Or are you boosting? I didn’t notice if you mentioned. Can’t wait to see the intake mani.
The overall goal today was to get the dash out, start to access the quality (or lack thereof as I’d later find out) of the wiring that was still in the car, and play with gauges. Started by pulling the dash out which unfortunately ended with me and a pair of diagonal cutters going to town due to some idiots in the past installing some sort of aftermarket alarm and stereo equipment. Wires EVERYWHERE, needless to say, I wasnt pleased. Wiring harness seems to be mainly intake though and I’ll likely rewire sections of it rather than go for full replacement, meanwhile the gauges and engine management will be on their own harness separate from the rest of the electronics.
Man, I have having parts of the front of the dash bolted/screwed down, makes everything a total pain, this is where the german’s know what they are doing with mounting the dashes on pinch welds and having very few pieces of hardware holding them in.
All out! What a mess!
My blower is bigger than yours… to bad mine doesnt make BOOOOOOST!
Hahahaha.
I was really pleased with the state of some of the rearward interior pieces and headliner today. Upon further inspection a lot of them are either in pristine original condition.
The fuse “box” amused Mike and I greatly.
Defi BF 60mm (IIRC) dropped in on top of a stock gauge, they fit perfectly, and they just released a tach too. Now just gotta find out about a speedo they aparently had at SEMA.
And to my pleasant surprise I got home to my Carbon ZG Flares waiting for me.
nice man keep up the great work. Interested to see how it turns out. Let me know when its finished and ill host a private day again so you can drift tune her.
Just met with the guys at Procar Performance in Rochester NY who did the cage in my PCA 944 about stiffening up the 240z while still keeping it daily comfortable for summer use. (So I dont destroy it sliding it around). Chassis should be moved there sometime early in the new year for new floors and mild cage work, in the meantime, need to work on suspension and engine mounting. Should be test fitting up the VQ next week.
Interior getting slowly but surely down to stripped so I can cut the floorboards out and finish rewiring for defi’s and new HVAC controls.
Something I’ve been struggling with for weeks, the car has ANCIENT wheel locks on it, and I have no key. I think I’m going to end up welding nuts onto them and taking them off that way, but I figured I’d post an image and see if anyone knew what it was, or had a better idea.
Hilarious “playboy” decals in the 1/4 windows. There is also one for the alarm, one for the alpine head unit and one for the CA911 foundation from like 1982.
Much better! Have to remove the stock hvac and then I’ll be ready to start cutting the floors out.
Engine bay almost completely stripped. Almost ready to get sandblasted (any local recommendations?)
Overview, also test mounted the carbon flares, they look awesome, hoping to get those on the car sometime in the next week as the welting kits from Austin (240hoke) came in.
Bought a '95 KA24DE motorset, 100k miles, uncut harness, trans, etc, etc. Picking that up Sunday and using parts from Bings.ca for KA-T.
Small update for today, took some time mounting the passanger’s front carbon ZG flare. Now that I’ve done it once I know I can do the other side a lot quicker, but that’s fairly standard with this sort of thing. Also ground off a bunch more brackets in the engine bay, almost have it all smoothed out to the point where the concentration will be paint removal and repainting.
Drilled and marked, I had previously drilled out the ZG flare and then held the flare up while Andy (300zx) and Joe (91MR2) marked the holes for me. Thanks guys!
I always feel REALLY strange when cutting bodywork on the car… mostly it’s a “What the $@#* did you just do idiot!!!” feeling, but hey it always works out. In case you missed it, I recently did this to my 951 also:
I freaked out then too.
MSA Carbon ZG Flare, Hoke Performance ZG Flare rubber welting and hardware kit (nutserts and other assorted stainless hardware)
This has got to be the most exciting thread on SON right now. It’s not even my car, I don’t even know the guy but I am excited to see how this car comes along, I have always been a Datsun fan… Good luck with the build, I can’t wait to see the finished product!
I tried picking up one of these the other day, but it was too heavy, I have to go to the gym more.
Srsly thou, this is pretty baller, I love the CF flares. Keep us updated.
