Pittspeed Fitness & Nutrition thread update:

has anyone gone on a no-pop diet?

a couple friends gave up pop for awhile, and lost some weight.

i’m not really heavy, i’m like 155lbs.

but i gave up pop about 2 weeks ago, and i’ve lost like 3lbs.

i go through Snapple rasp teas, like crazy though.

anyone else cut out they’re soda consumption?

Soda elimination works.

i drink MT DEW like a champ!! i’ll never quit drinkin that stuff

True, but in my case it is hard to gain muscle poundage, i have lost fat but gained muscle n still are the same weight as i was when i began lifting n “working” out lil over a month ago. I don’t really do any cardio, i just try to eat alot of protein, like 200+ grams a day…

I dont drink pop at all. mostly water and OJ. but beer is def a downfall

To gain muscle and lose fat is VERY hard to do…some even say it is not possible…unless you are very new to weight lifting. I think the only way to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time is to eat clean and just enough to gain muscle while doing a HIIT program in addition to your weight training…since HIIT has been proven to target fat, where some forms of cardio will actually burn muscle.

i like beer…and i think i got stronger after i drink a few beers a week. lol

but i’m kinda greatful i never had to worry about fat… i’ve always been skinny and little and within the last 3 years or so, i’ve managed to put on around 30lbs of muscle. i’ve heard of guys puttin on 15lbs in a year!! some even more… i just dont gain weight… its all in my lifestyle tho, i’m very active so i would need to eat a freakin ton of food a day and lots of protein. i just dont have enough time in a day to keep eating constantly lol

I gain fat and muscle incredibly easy which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. I have no problem packing on lean mass when thats what im trying to do. Although even with a pretty clean diet I will always gain unwanted fat because the amount i need to eat to grow.

I have never really tried to get cut or diet down before this current attempt. I am maintaining my muscle mass very well and in some places actually growing.

The cardio, to me, is not bad at all because ive always liked running. Im currently using ABB speed stack as an energy booster pre-workout.

My weight has stayed in the area of 190 pounds since early December but my body composition is changing. Im anxiously awaiting the pounds to start coming off as i start to push harder and cut calories.

i would have to say my weakness is beer also but its not the calories from beer that do me in. The alcohol kills my metabolism and then im always making horrible choices in food while drunk! Ive been doing very well at keeping my drinking in check. I still drink a good amount of beer once every few weeks! I kinda use it as a reward for maintaining my motivation and working in the gym

The main reason why people lose weight when they stop drinking pop, or switch to diet is because of the way the body processes HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS is not recognized by the body as a usable sugar and it is IMMEDIATELy processed by the liver and STORED as FAT. Check labels and steer clear of anything that has high fructose corn syrup. You are much better off brewing up a pitcher of iced tea and sweetening it with regular table sugar or honey.

My green tea iced tea recipe:

5 Lipton Green tea bags
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of 1 lemon
1/4 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of honey

Another drawback to drinking pop is the carbonation. The CO2 is absorbed into the blood and actually makes respiration harder. The lungs have to work harder to clear the extra CO2 from the blood.

wow. did not know this… i’m gonna have to cut back

So i did the body fat test(BMI) at the gym today b4 i lifted and it turned out to be better than i expected, it was 13.3% which is what Professional athletes are in range for. I was surprised for being 6ft and 185-190. I also got a great workout in due to my back feels a lil better from the numerous sessions of the chiro n stretching n so fourth. A kid i know is a PT and i worked out with him today adn he kept releiving the muscle pressure on my back muscles which helped out ALOT, i also learned a few more things about different ways of building the same muscle n surrounding of that muscle. Now if only cleanquik306 would awnser his damn phone…

13.3% is pretty decent…congrats. I take it they used calipers? I did that my senior year in college and was like 12.2%…but I always wanted to do the water test. Now I am 212lbs…been stuck there for a little while and am sure my bf% has risen…but after i hit 220 I am going to run a cut till I look decent and hopefully get into the 10-12% BF range @ 210-212. Sure looks good on paper…haha

Not the calipers, i had that doen in high school, i was like 11 or 12% then and 160,LOL. They used that lil machine that sends waves through ur body n accounts for ur height n weight, it is only a difference of about 1% on the machine form calipers. I have bee nhitting up the pretein pretty good for about a month now for build up n so fourth as well so i can kinda tell that muscle had taken the place of some fat i had and still maintaining my weight at the same level. So all in all i guess what i am doing is working out pretty good. I do however splurge alot on weekends with food n beer but appearently my body is burning the carbs n fat pretty good, lol

my first year of college i was 5’10 and 174lbs or so and like 8 or 9 % i think. god i wish i could get back there.

8 or 9% isnt pretty healthy i beleive,lol. Maybe u were a lil more:bj:

anything sub 10% is either just being young/genetic or some tuff ass work. When I was in college @ 12% I could eat anything I wanted…but I was also a lot more active so I think it was a combo of both.

Sounds like you are doing real well devin…keep it up. I am sort of plateauing for now but I am going to switch a few things up and see what happens.

I don’t think it is too bad…but once you get around the 5-6% range then it isnt too healthy. I would saw 9-12% is a decent target range

Ahhhh, the days of eating like a fucking ethiopian at an all u can eat buffet n not gain a single pound:bigok: of course i rode BMX constantly n very hard everyday so i couldn’t gain a single pound if my life depended on it, getting older sucks! But after finding that out it just pushes me harder to acheive what goals i want.

12-14% is 6 pack showing territory!

BTW, I read the Abs Diet book a few weeks ago. There are some good recipes and other tidbits of info in there.

The latest Men’s Health has some good core exercises to help strengthen the lower back and prevent injury. I’ve implemented them to my ab workout and the difficulty has increased. I thought I had a good ab workout until I implemented these. Felt like someone hit me in the side with a bat.

Got a touch of the flu and havent seen the weights in a week.

i was running 4miles a day, doing crazy situps, hockey 2-4x a week. eating good… lifting.
