project 300sx

To start i own a 90 nissan 240sx. The ca18det that was in it broke, i began to rebuild it and found it wasnt a great motor, Not terrible though.
so i started planning on an rb25 swap from the skyline. i did a ton of research and was almost ready to buy the motor to begin the swap.

I did a 1001 part search for anything and everything that i could need or run into problems with. Since there is no oem market in the US, all parts would have to be aftermarket or used. I didnt like that one bit. So i did plenty of searching to find a motor that i can get parts for easily and somewhat cheap.

I came across the vg30dett out of a 300zx. I did even more searching and all the info i could find on it. I love the fact that, to start, its a v6, twin turbo engine with alot of torque. Though parts are pricey i can find the relativly easy, and on the other hand motor sets go for almost nothing compared to the RB’s.

I found only one guy that did this swap into an s13. He did it a few years ago, has not been online in forever so i cant get the all the info i need. but his thread provided enough to get me going.

i have been talking to a few that have done the vg30e swap, which is sohc engine, and no turbos, unlike the vg30dett. i got plelty of information and i bought the motor.

As of now i tore it down so i can begin to replace gaskets, timing belts, etc. So far this motor is very cool. Different then a lot of motors ive had apart.

There is my car a month or so ago. just waiting on a few paychecks to come in so i can buy parts.

uugh…have fun…were in the same boat

damn, clean 240! just gotta ditch that pignose!

nice project good luck!

Whoa, Is that “the nicest and rarest 240 in all of WNY !!!” haha anyway GL. Im in the process of putting a VH45de in an S13.

I don’t know if that D will fit in there. My S12 had a single cam that just barely fit and lots of the S12 guys said they could get the twin cammer in but not the exhaust. Good luck.

Clean car I loved that car. Good luck with the swap.

thanks guys. “it is the cleanest and rarest 240 in wny”. or was at least. needs little bit of body work. i.e. little paint bubbles got worst and a hole in the drivers frame. no big deal though.

I think im keeping the front end. i like it. The siliva conversion is sweet but not on a hatch. To me it dont look as good. if it was a coupe, hell ya. i will be doing the sleepy eyes to change the look.

i know these are not a big/good brand of wheel but this is the look i want eventually

Maybe the 180sx taillamps, no body kit, def new seats and wheel.

But for now main focus is the motor. Got to change to a front oil sump, One of the turbos might be bad idk yet, got to pull it apart more. has some oil leak from the valve cover, and getting it mounted up in the car.

Like cavi mike was mentioning, I would test fit the motor before you go tearing it down and rebuilding it incase it doesnt fit.

great motors. big though, hope it fits

nice car  what makes it so rare? lol there’s like 5 s13’s on this site alone.

had a ca18det…that setup is pretty rare. However, most would argue it’s just not that special.

The motor fits, I’ve seen a few of these swaps. But I can’t seem to find any info / pics from a quick search.

What’s funny is that articzap went through alllllllll that trying to convince NYSpeed that a CA was the best motor, then in the end the new owner is going to rip it out anyway :purextc:

This cars old build thread is here:

^ that, and it blew up lol.

good luck, looking forward to this

Do you work at LandRover on Sheridan?

Man, I just do NOT understand swapping that engine in. Especially with how cheap VQ, VK, and VH’s are. (Not to mention easy to work on).

Are you kidding ? That may be so for an S12, But the bay on an S13 is huge. Literally the only modification needed for a VH is a 1" deep notch to the frame for the alternator, and thats only so you can use a stock bracket, which isn’t even necessary.

Most would argue that it is special at all.

He hasnt been online since 07 and i never seen it run but in there is alot of info, and you can see the engine and trans are in at least. That thread is about 10 pages long so if you want just thumb through for the pics lol
