Hey, okay so I am sure this has been discussed before. I have tried for days looking for answers on just about every forum and on google with no luck. So I got a jdm car from quebec last year, got the bill of sale and ownership. I have not yet registered the car in ontario, was just using a dealer plate. So recently I called a few insurance companies as my first step, everyone gave me the same answer " your vin number only has 9 digits we cant help you " So okay I skipped that step for now.
I go to register the car in my name today, I get the same answer the car only has 9 digits we cant read this in our computers. So okay, I am stuck with my car and no way to register it or get insurance? So does anyone have any idea what steps I need to take to get this damn thing on the road? I couldn’t even run a vin check on any websites because of the 9 digit short vin… Any way to legally change the car to a 17 digit Canadian vin? I have heard of it but no idea what the steps are. Only thing I can think of is going to a local court to get a affidavit if that will even help… :S Anyways if anyone can help me would be much appreciated! I am sure I must not be the only one to come into this problem… Thanks guys.
I believe it… I wouldn’t want to bring up something that has been talked about so often, but I honestly cant find one good answer to solve my problem… I figure at least one person here must be able to help me… I will continue to search here and on google, but it doesn’t seem to be getting me anywhere… I have never had this problem before, all my other cars were already register in ontario and was easy to do. Sorry to bring this question up again, I just seriously cant figure this one out… So if you could please direct me to this thread that has come up many times, because I cant find it.
I never said I import cars. I am part owner of Hasting Tires, I deal with mostly rednecks and hillbillys. E-tests and safeties is no problem, registering a jdm car, now that’s anther story. This is the first jdm car I ever owned that was not already registered in ontario, I honestly didn’t think it would be such hard work to figure out.
So if you have seen this question so many times, couldn’t you point me in the direction for some help? or you only here to start trouble with me? I really will appreciate the help… thanks.
Okay so after 48 hours of no sleep, hours of google search and phone calls I found my answer. So I might as well post it here in case anyone else comes into the problem. So pretty much when you buy a jdm car it will have a 9 digit vin #. What you do is call this # 4163475886 his name is Bill, he will give you all the info you need to know, then he will give you this number 4162523441 name is Shela she will send you a form to fill out and you will make payment to her of $450. Then at that point Bill will come to your house, inspect the car and if you pass inspection he will assign you a 17 digit usdm vin and you are ready to roll! Easy to insure with any company, hopefully cheap prices, and no headaches ! So if you have this problem, dont be changing vins, its illegal. Call bill and he will solve all your problems
Yeah I know but how many people actually know about this? How many people have you heard have problems getting insurance because of the 9 digit vin? Or high insurance rates? Even people at the ministry of transportation had no idea about getting a 17 digit vin assigned. I don’t understand why most jdm cares aren’t re-vinned? Do they just pick and choose whatever crap insurance rates they can get with whatever company will take them on? I just think if more people knew about this it would save a lot of headaches, real cheap and easy to do, sure solved all my problems.
So my good friend who was going to purchase the car ran into some money problems? You think that is the first time someone left a deposit on a car with hope and dreams they can gather the rest of the money, but aren’t exactly successful? No big deal, I ended up wanting to keep the car anyways. For the record Osaka was originally asking over $15,000 for that car, if you look on the site they still have it listed for $11,300. Is a great car, gave me no problems, really enjoy it, by far my fav s-chassis to own yet. So anyways no point to bring up a mega old thread of hate. if you have anything that could be useful to say about what this thread was actually about, then that would be great. If not I don’t know why bother saying anything at all? Thanks…
I just tried W.B. White in Oshawa, guy told me he wont deal with any right hand drive cars. You still have a 9 digit vin? As soon as every insurance company asks for my vin and I only give 9 digits, they all say they cant do it at that point lol. Is the 180 under your name? Existing policy with them? I am having no luck I think my only bet is having a 17 digit vin and saying nothing about rhd lol. Thanks for tryin to help Jesse
When you’re looking for insurance the first thing that comes out of your mouth regarding the car should be its right hand drive. When they hear that you know if they’ll even come close to insuring it or not. Second thing is they’ll expect the short vin. Third, re-vinning would be stupid because at the end of the day the vin they give you is from a usdm vehicle so forbid anythin happen and they see its rhd, you will be fucked. I did what OneEightZero did. It took me about 2 weeks, but i got everything legit.
Yeah true but the thing is the chick at the ministry of transportation said she cant even register my car in ontario having a 9 digit vin. I never knew it was a big deal but she said she’s never seen that before lol.
She’s a dumb ass for saying it can’t be done. I notice everyone is different when it comes to people who work at the dmv. If some one is having a bad day, they will make your day bad. Just like a cop. Just go somewhere else. I noticed when i gave the quebec ownership for her to transfer, she had to get someone with more experience to help her transfer it. Just go somewhere else.
The MTO is full of lazy ffucking asshes that love to try and refuse instead of assist, and are often wrong 9/10 times for the most part. I found an excellent location where the people actually do their job instead of pulling shit out of their ass to make your life difficult.
The re-vinning is all government, you’re not fucked if you crash it. It isn’t a USDM vin, it’s a special Canadian VIN. The dude inspects the car to gather the necessary information to document so you wouldn’t be fucked.
My point is its completely uneeded to register a rhd car down here with a different vin. Im just commenting on what ive seen ppl do illegally. When i registered my 180, i never had to pay for a different vin. i use the one the car came with.
Lol so true man! Its all about who you talk too. Just got back from registering the car, nice old lady gave me no problems did it quick and easy. I guess I might not even do the re-vin if I can just find a decent insurance company to take me on. I will just keep searching. What a pain in the ass searching for all this info lol. Thanks for the help guys I know what to do now, I think haha.
