X2. I spell things out incredibly clear, what I’m selling, what’s been done to it, what it may need in the future, etc. It’s no different when I bought cars as a teen…
I’d never wish an accident or death on someone, ever. But I do feel that nature will take it’s course. Dumb people have a tendency to do dumb things, I have no control over that. Either they end up getting hurt/die or they become CEOs and Presidents.
And btw: my opinions on the value of life have never nor will they ever effect the quality of my teaching ability. But thanks.
I go through the motions in an attempt to save the car i put time and money into from getting fucked up… not so much the individual buying it.
When I sold my gsxr 600 I felt the same way. The kid was clearly inexperienced, and it was his first bike. Nice enough kid though, and I basically said if you buy this bike you NEED to take the msf course, ride with gear, etc etc.
He gave me cash and trailored it away.
A 17 year old kid bought my '06 WRX.
I made sure that his father understood the difference between a WRX and a normal Impreza, he assured me that he did. I also tried to impress on the kid that it was more than quick enough to get him in a lot of trouble, and that trying to launch it like his buddy’s honda was a fast path to expensive repairs…
I was hesitant to sell it to a kid but in the end I decided that if his father understands the car and believes his kid can handle it then it isn’t my place to judge or second-guess.
Hrm, paging Jays. I wonder if some crazy lawyer in NY could pin you on a negligence claim in some twisted sense of NY law…
ny state gave them a drivers license. not you. the only thing i would feel guilty about is selling a car that you know is going to break down any minute now.
I had some kid come with his mom to buy my talon. He asked if the rad fan switch was there to “turn on the turbo”. After he said that I pretty much decided not to sell it to him. Not necessarily because he would have most definitely killed himself, but more because I wanted to save him the time, money, and disappointment of taking it to his hometown mechanic every time it broke.
Honestly, this would worry me a bit just because I know how lost the idea of personal responsibility is in our civil court system. If the mods were done right (and legally) I think it would be tough for a lawyer to make a case, but lots of people take shortcuts here and there. Add to it the hypothetical here of a dumb kid who’s parents are probably paying for some of it, those same parents who will be looking for someone to blame other than themselves after a bad wreck and it’s easy to see a scummy lawyer filing a lawsuit.
And I’m sure someone will chime in with, “well, I warned him when I sold it”. Yeah, guess what a good lawyer will do with that? Say that by warning him you admitted the car was unsafe. They do the same thing when someone puts up a beware of dog sign and a trespasser ignores it and gets bit.
Well, hopefully the parent’s were in the car too when the idiot wrecks it. Take out a whole breed of DUMB in one fell swoop.
not a car, but i had a built honda sport quad that i had sold to a kid who wasent very experienced, he only had auto utility atvs before. i told him to take it easy or it would bite him in the ass pretty good. turns out a few weeks later he went into a tree pretty hard, broke his arm and bent up all sorts of stuff on the quad.
i do regret selling it but only because that thing was so much fun and i miss riding. however the money i got for it was well over what that model was selling for at the time.
people do stupid things. i wouldnt worry about selling it to someone that doesnt know, just dont let them come back to you every other day asking questions or itll become a headache.
I LOL’d
Lol u just fuckin hate people dont ya haha., i guess in some cases a highly modded car should be thought about before selling to a young inexperienced driver. For ex, id probably feel bad sellin a 500 horse rwd car to a kid because he has no idea whats gonna happen if he double clutches wrong or trys being ken block around a corner cuz hes probably gonna destroy the car and injure someone… But its the crazy world we live in i guess. Cash always talks lol.
Money talks. I don’t care what they do with the car after they buy it.
Doesn’t even have to be a modified car for the dumb people to come out. My dad sold an 89 Civic we had back in the late 90’s to a guy. We told him that it needed a head gasket and should be trailered. He said he understood. Then we offered to trailer it back to his place or a mechanic for him at no cost. The guy passed on that saying he would drive it home. We offered a few times, but he passed each time. Came with cash, hopped in the car and drove off. Made it a mile to the first big hill and popped the motor in traffic. Called us back almost immediately stating he wanted his money back. My dad laughed and hung up the phone.
this.
good thread… surprising answers. I assume nobody would care selling a car, and bikes are even worse as tyler said.
Wonder how the guy that sold that mustang to the kid that crashed on Transit feels??
Someone could be 40 and be inexperienced with really fast cars, so age isn’t really relavent.
My friends had some decently quick cars in high school, plus at least one 600 in the group. I was 23 when I got my current cobra and I didn’t consider myself inexperienced, I was actually bummed it wasn’t faster.
$$ in my pocket and im good to go
My old car when i owned it:
After bro brah from Rochester had it a few months:
and it only ran mid 13’s…
