Smoking Ban

I don’t really care about the ban. I’d rather go outside and smoke anyway.

And if any of you have seen me at a show, you’d notice that I always do it at a distance from people, and never around children. It’s just the smokers that are assholes that give us all a bad name. Just because I have a bad habit doesn’t make me a bad person; I smoke with courtesy. The ban doesnt bother me. There’s nothing any of us can do about it, just fall in and accept that it’s the way it’s going to be.

this escallated quickly

starboy is another courtesy smoker… we have gone on countless road trips, and we never had a problem.

I am the same way. I dont smoke around people that are bothered by it. Hell if I have friends over my house who dont like it, Ill either go upstairs and smoke or smoke very little. My roomie that I lived with for a year didnt smoke, so I didnt smoke anywhere in the house except for my room, and everything in the house (furniture, stuff like that) was mine. I agree and disagree with the ban on certain things, but hey, I am not part of the government…thankfully.

you pay an unemployment tax on your PA income… wtf is so hard to understand. its not just employers it is everyone that works that pays the bills. do you understand now? :weak:

they just said on the news that the smoking ban was cancelled in allegheny county due to the fact that casinos would be exempt

yep that is “the reason”…or it could be for elections Dan Onoroto doesnt want the smokers to remeber he didnt veto the bill.

his veto can still be overridden

Every bar I went to in California was packed, and I never saw a single cigarette.

You think people are going to drive 20 miles from the city just so they can smoke in a resturant?

I agree with the ban wholeheartedly. In fact, I think we need to up the cigarette tax to $10/pack to fund socialised health care.

EXACTLY!!!:bigok: :bigok: :bigok:

But these are not “Public places”! These are PRIVATE BUSINESSES! That is the point.

If the government REALLY cared about public health, they would outlaw tobacco. Period. Stop with all these bullshit laws restricting a legal product. Make the fucking product illegal. End of problem. That will never happen, because politicians don’t give a fuck about you, me or our health. They care about tax money, power, and keeping their jobs. Cynical, yes, but go ahead and prove me wrong.

ding ding ding…

big business tobacco = winnah
small business owner = losah

:blue:

Its all politics…so you never know

That’s becasue people didn’t have an alternative

Yep, they sure will. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive. There are also plenty of people who live within 5 miles of a neighboring county who will go to that neighboring counties bars and restaurants

Government health care. Oh great, brought to you by the same people who brought you the $600 toilet seat.

The point that ‘beat90tsi’ is trying to make, that seems to be lost on a lot of you is this:

More government laws that infringe on the rights of private businesses and private citizens are not something to applaud. The arguments about laws against murder and such are vacuous. Apples and Oranges. There are a LOT of people out there who would be very happy to see laws passed that will make the following things illegal:
Engine swaps
Engine modifications
ANY modifications to a motor vehicle
They would want laws demanding
30MPG minimum economy
1hp/25lb maximum power/weight ratio

When you are on the slippery slope of government intervention, you can end up falling down the hill. No one is saying that common sense laws are not needed, but this goes FAR beyond that. Seriously, if you want to know what Governments role in our lives is supposed to be…read the Constitution.

I do not smoke, but i support a businesses right to accomodate his customers.
I just find it puzzling that automotive enthusiasts would welcome so much Government regulation.

Actually in the eyes of the law in general you are wrong. These are places open to the public, and are therefore considered “public places”. By opening up their property to the general public and encouraging the general public to enter as a means of the support, the private business owner has agreed to give up certain rights that they may have had as a “private” property owner in order to receive other protections under the law. It’s all a big game of give and take.

100% correct…now if you belong to a private club then it is another story

like the way canada has prostitution by calling strip clubs ‘private’ and you buy a membership of $15 to get in and are allowed two guests for $10 a piece?

I dont ‘really’ care about the ban… however it wouldn’t bother me if I could eat my food or have a drink without being covered in smoke. I choose not to smoke so at times I dont think its fair that even though I chose not to harm my own health, I am harmed by other’s choices. On a side note- When I go to a bar I expect to smell like crap when I come out of it.

I guess what I’m trying to say is it only bothers me when I am trying to enjoy a meal, or enjoy myself to the fullest. It also bothers me when people are smoking aroundchildren that aren’t theirs or elderly folks.

I think it only pisses me off in those situations, otherwise- I’ll just get up and leave.

Of course they did. They could have stayed home, went to private parties, or perhaps go to the casino where I"m not sure but I’m guessing smoking is allowed to a certain extent at least. I was just in Florida where similar laws are in place, still plenty of people in the bars. Also went to one of the big casinos down there on an Indian reservation so the smoking ban was not enforced, not overly packed with all the smokers who drove an extra 10-15 miles to get there, hell not all that many smokers in general.

The very small amount of people who will go out of there way to go out of the county to smoke would most likely be equalled out with those that would go into the county just to be able to get away from the smoke.

Laws requiring reduced emissions on public roads as well as those limiting modifcations to vehicles are often times best for the public well-being. The more rediculously modified a vehicle get the less it should be on a public road and the more it should be on a track where all those things can be done to cars without endagering innocent by-standers.

Well McDonalds doesn’t allow smoking, I’m pretty sure Starbucks doesn’t, and there are plenty of others. The point is, businesses are free to ban smoking right now, and plenty have done it. Go eat dinner somewhere that requires men to wear a jacket, and see if you can light up in there.

If I want to drink, and not be around smoke I have plenty of choices. If I dislike loud engines/exhausts, I probably shouldn’t go to PRP on a Wed night, but join the vespa club instead.

There are cabs you can smoke in, and ones you can’t. It works well now, I think anytime we can avoid new laws, we are better off. Just think of all the time and tax dollars that have already been wasted on this stupid issue.

People should let their actions speak for them. Don’t like the smoke in a cheap bar in the Southside? Don’t go there, go to a place that doesn’t allow smoking. Don’t like gas guzzling SUVs? Don’t buy one.
