So If Myers goes down for 10 games and they go 10-0, we should ship him off? What if Miller pulls a groin and We go .800, would Miller be off the team?
Now I’m not a huge Roy fan, off ice I hear he’s a dick. But he puts up numbers. Pominville , Gaustad, Niedermayer , Grier, Hecht, Rivet, Connoly would all go before Roy IMO.
Won’t argue that, but putting hockey teams down south really doesn’t work out. Tampa Bay however I think is on the right path, with new jerseys, promotions, coupons, etc.
Roy put’s up numbers because he gets the opportunity. More ice time = more chances. More PP’s = more chances. However, it’s what you do in that ice time that is more important. 95% of the league wouldn’t give him the time he gets. He’d be a 3rd liner.
You’re obviously a “Sabres” fan and not a “Hockey” fan. You’re not seeing the broad scope of what Roy gets paid compared to others and their respective productivity.
Nobody but his mother thinks Derek Roy is a Super Star.

As much as I’ve given Regier grief, I’m excited to see what he can do with an owner that wants to win and is a hockey fan himself. I can’t say that Regier has been playing with a full deck, after seeing yesterdays press conference. Give him 18 months to get his shit together and get a good core of guys on this team and lets GO. The guy did get Briere and Drury for CHEAP and I’m not all that mad that he never resigned them. Not for a combined $14 million.
He just needs to get a god damned scouting team back in the game. This video scouting stuff is bullshit. This isn’t facebook/internet/viral applicable. You can’t pin point hesitations, delays, communication abilities and habits when you only see 1/3 of whats going on, on the ice or on video.
The problem with southern teams is how young the organizations are. Also, a lot of guys don’t want to play hockey there. Give them a some more time and things will be better, especially because a lot of it has to do with the economy. When people are $250,000 upside down in their house, they can’t afford $400 for a hockey game. The only team (other than Phoenix) with serious attendance issues is ATL…a lot of that has to do with Kovy/ownership.
Raleigh does pretty good with the Hurricanes. Hell, they just had the all-star game here last week!! The turnout was phenomenal. They did a huge festival in downtown raleigh, free concert, had tons of stuff going on. A LOT of people showed up to celebrate the all-star game.
You would be surprised what one winning season can do… That winning season in what? 06?, where they beat the sabres in the semi-final and then went on to win the cup REALLY created a pretty strong bandwagon afterwards. I can assure you they don’t have the type of folliowing that Buffalo/Detroit does, but they’re definitely not struggling to stay afloat either.
I can assure you that if attendance is an issue anywhere, it’s because the team sucks.
I am a hockey fan, I’m also a Sabres fan. I, by no means think Derek Roy is like the Hockey Messiah and is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He however is one of OUR top forwards and puts pts on the score sheet. If the price was right I’d give Derek Roy away, he’s just not my top trade priority. Hell they can take Vanek for the right price. If you took me for one of those “We need to keep Pominville because we have that banner at the games and he’s a good player and derek roy is awesome!!111” then you are incorrect. It is absurd how much our players make compared to a Perry, or Ryan, etc.
Raleigh has really blown up in the past 4 or 5 years. A lot of that has to do with more people relocating there. It also has to do with them having a decent team. Tampa is the same way.
I fucking can’t stand basketball. However, if we had an NBA team who won games, I’d fucking go. You bet your ass I would.
the 'Canes are building a decent team. Say what you will about them, I’d take Eric Staal on my team any day of the week. Cam Ward…not so much. My sister-in-law usually goes to a game every year down there and says there are TONS of sabres fans at the game. I also agree about Tampa. They just unveiled their new jerseys and each Season ticket holder gets one free. Season ticket holders get a lot of little quarks down there. Not to mention they really have a decent team. Stamkos is one of my favorite players to watch ATM.
Nashville is doing pretty good for a southern market. They have a hell of a following here too, even when the team isn’t playing well and attendance is down. This year they’re playing pretty well and getting great attendance numbers.
Question: “Are you willing to lose money to improve the team” (or something like that).
TP: "I have to be careful how I answer this because of this guy (gestures to Bettman sitting next to him). Mockingly says “We’re in this to make money” as if imitating Bettman from some prior closed door conversation. Then gets serious and says, “I’m going to run this team to win a Stanley Cup. If I wanted to make money I’d go drill a gas well”.
