I used to go to world gym, but now that it’s planet fitness, i hate it and intend on finding a different gym very soon. furthermore, i plan on buying a power cage for home in the future so there is no real reason to go to a gym at all.
EvoMR (sam?) have you done any actual mountain climbing, e.g. sly stallone in cliffhanger? :lol:
I think my problem is I need to get serious. I still can’t claim to know what HIIT even is. Thus far I’ve gotten to the gym 4-5 times a week. Get there, jog a mile, lift whatever I feel like (usually deadlifts, lightweight squats, bench, low row, dips, lat pulldowns, snatch lifts, military press, crunches, etc, trying not to do the same thing 2 days in a row) finish with 4 minutes of guerrilla cardio on an exercise bike with the resistence cranked up, then go home and make a protein smoothie.
I’m bigger than what I was 3 months ago, but not big by any definition of the word. But that’s OK. I’m more concerned with getting rid of this visceral fat.
I’m eating 6 small healthy meals a day, but that usually falls apart on the weekends.
So now that I’m in the habit of exercising every day, I need to:
-Learn/Do HIIT type stuff, not the random workouts I’ve been doing.
-Continue eating 6 small meals a day, but shift carbs in the morning rather than spread out all day
-Don’t fall apart on the weekend, although I believe in controlled cheating
-Live a long sexy life

I’m still at Planet Fitness. It’s fine for what I am looking for. I have probably seen you there, but not realized who you were.
Fry, it sounds like you are doing a lot of things right… but it also seems like you need a defined routine and a log to keep track of your progress. I always take a composition notebook with me, and the exercises w/weight+rep goals are defined before I get to the gym. Logging your progress + defining a routine is very important.
Also, try not to listen to all the ninnys that are in this thread- they won’t make you a man, but instead a fit cheerleader.
I just want to nail the fit cheerleaders.
Didnt see this until now, but I workout at Planet Fitness up the road, I couldn’t do the machine bench, I prefer free weight! Come on up there sometime

yay for squatting, that’s what I’m doing when I get out of work tonight… I’m maybe 1/4 of the way into a cutting cycle and enjoying the fun of tons of reps with like 185lbs after a nice 2 mile run.
Thanks for the invite man, I went to PF all summer but can’t pass up the free gym here. Although I miss parking next to the yellow s2k with cf hood. And I definitely like machine bench better since I work out alone. haha
edit: this may sound homo, but what do you look like? my roommate audra was oggling some guy that worked at PF last august and meant to ask him out. from what she said like, 5’10" brown short hair? who knows

:lol: When I get to the gym I’m very focused and determined, usually with some mix playing in my earbuds. I’m not really into socializing when there.
The machine press… :tdown: If you are going alone, at least use a power rack and set the safety rails a bit above your chest so you can go to failure and scoot out if things get hectic

Machines move a weight in a standard motion. They do not allow for variances in the movement, and thus only go up and down, left and right, in and out, etc. It cannot move left or right when it’s intended to go up and down.
Free weights are essentially free, and can move in any direction. Because of this, the body is required to use other muscles to stabilize the weight so that it will move only within the desired range. With a machine press, the stabilizing muscles are not worked, and you are overall weaker. I promise if you can bench 225 with a machine press, you will struggle to come near that with free weights. Your pecs might be in great shape, but the stabilizing muscles in your shoulders, triceps and back will be left way behind.
the short and sweet version is: free weights work more muscles and give you an overall stronger build.
That does not mean there isn’t a place for machines depending on your goals. Bodybuilders often do a machine-centric workout just because they can absolutely blast thier show muscles with a heavier weight. Also, supporting a free weight workout with machines makes sense if you really believe in the “burn” philosophy.

Just a quick link. There are a TON of reasons and NO its is not the same to lift something on the machine as it is on the bar…just the same as bar is not the same as dumbbell.
I would go more in depth but im about to watch that new Clint Eastwood flick.
Jeez I got owned. So say two people both lifted 200lbs every day for a year, one using a machine and one using free weight. There’d be a massive difference between the two?
Oh well, I just found a gym in lockport I’m going to get a membership at so I guess I can do freeweights there.
