I hate to be the one to say it, but it really sounds like they knew what they were after.
Did anyone contact you about parts that never showed up to buy them?
They’d have to be pretty aware of 240s to get in and steal what they did.
But they also did some weird things.
Like cutting the battery leads. They had to smash the window first, so they’d know if the car had an alarm or not by then.
The only problem with an active alarm system (electric shock, I’ve also seen ones that lock thieves in the car) is that either one day you’ll forget about it and be on the receiving end, or it’ll piss the thief off so much, he’ll set your car on fire.
Unfortunately this is what has lead me to rarely lock my cars. I had someone smash out a rear quarter window in my Charger to get in. Sad thing was it wasn’t even locked, it just looked like it was (the plunger was threaded way down, to keep me form being able to lock it) and you really have to pull on the handle to get the door open.
Didin’t steal my shitty deck, or shitty tapes. Honestly, all I found was a newspaper and coffee time cup. The best I can figure, they broke in to chill out, read the paper and drink their coffee.
And I was out $500 for new glass, cut myself horribly cleaning out the glass (thought I’d cleaned it all up, stuck my hand between the seat in the back, found a cluster of broken glass by sticking my hand right in it)
The second time I know of, in a well lit, (supposedly secure) underground garage. Someone scared off someone trying to do something in my car. The super called me, and when I went don, I found they’d broken the ignition cylinder, scratched the hell out of my column.
In a car that old, you can open the hood without needing to get inside. Had they bothered, they would have noticed there was no battery and no carburetor. Heheh.
I don’t really think stickers are more of draw … not more than the car being a 240. Like 90% of people that rock stickers don’t even have the products.
I don’t think it would hurt to go back through your PMs and eliminate one by one the people that have come by/contacted/have your address.
This isn’t by far the first person that has been selling stuff through the classifieds that has been ripped off later.
Hell, I’ve even found people skulking around behind MSSC.
When a Civic takes off in a hurry because you stroll out with a 15-pound sledge to ask why they’re hanging around at 1 am … it’s hard to not imagine what they were up to.
Rather than drill their kneecaps (I like that too, but knees are resilient and it’s hard to get someone to sit still that long.)
Much easier and much faster to grab a pair of tin snips and cut their achilles tendon. One snip = instant paralysis, and relatively painless.
