Underbody rust prevention

[quote=“livin4hockey,post:20,topic:32966"”]

I’m thinking about having it done for my car this winter. I am planning on doing some suspension work next summer though, so what’s the consensus. Is having an oily mess on the underbody worth working through for the sake of preventing rust? I think it’s probably definitely worth it. Just wanted to see what others have to say. And I’m not even sure if having it done would create any mess in the suspension.

i’d rather degrease the underbody than deal with rust.

on that note, by the time spring rolls around, it’s not like there’s that much left on there anyways.

How many people have had their cars rustop’d that really hated it after a winter? i’ve counted a total of none in the past 6yrs on the forums.

Yeah, that’s what I figured. But it doesn’t hurt to just double check. Seems like a solid investment.

a buddy of mine bought a cheap harbor freight undercoating gun and adapted it to connect to a bottle. he mixes up some 40wt non detergent tractor oil from tractor supply and cheap motor honey and sprays it on. ive used it on a few cars and it works well. kinda goes on like snot and then levels out lol.

for painting rust after grinding, ive used rust bullet (www.rustbullet.com) with great results. as a test I ground a rusty spot on my wifes neon and then applied two thin coats and left it exposed (no topcoat)… that was 2 years ago and its still rust free.

We had my sisters mazda6 done at schmidts (on sheridan & millersport) every fall since she bought it, for $100 / yr. It’s an '04 with ~60k miles and you could eat off the chassis.

The oily mess? I heard this referenced a few times, but its blown out of proportion IMO.
For two - three days after its done, i had her park her car on the lawn, so as not to mess the drive. Other then that, not a single problem. No real overspray to speak of, and by the time spring came around there was no problem with the stuff.

If you have a winter car (that you like) with a clean underside, the $100/yr is well worth it. Hell, even if you dont like the car, you should have it done so that you can resell it more easily.

I’m interested in this stuff too…

I plan on keeping my shiny new Xterra for about 12 years. Sounds like Schmidts will be getting $1200 dollars from me over those 12 years. At the end of those 12 years a rust-free Nissan truck will be worth a lot more than an extra $1200.

That’s what I’m figuring with my Subaru.

Sure it’s a '96, but it has a clean underbody right now, and only has 100k on the clock. If I can keep the body in one piece, it should last me a few years up in Vermont while I am finishing up school and then I can buy a newer car once I have a career.

So this stuff is getting put on each fall. When about is the best time to do it? Should I wait until November?

Bump. 10% off coupon on the website.

Reading this pretty well sold me on doing the Xterra before the first winter.

The coating schmitts does is awesome… I worked on a 72 lincoln of the original owner that had driven it through ever buffalo winter since 72 and it had 400k on it. It had been coated every 5 years since it was bought and I tell you what I have worked on 1 year old cars that were in worse shape.

theres a place on the blvd near the NF airport that does it. Place is called Car well…i believe they are cheaper then $100

Good luck trying to stop the inevitable, the chassis may not rust but what about the rest of the car? I think 100 a year on car washes in the winter maybe money better spent. I guess it would be a good idea if your car is prone to chassis rot.

How come I only get to spend $100 per year? How come I shouldn’t stop the chassis from rusting because the body might still rust? How come prolonging the inevitible isn’t a good thing?

Your logic eludes me dude.

i did it my self the first year i had my 89 maxima which had no rust at the time. only place that rusted out on that car after 4 years was the bottom of some of the panels from not spraying the stuff inside the doors. but i made mine at harkness when i did it. tar and like 20w50 oil. lol shot that shit on and never did it again! i wish i was still there to do it to my malibu

I wish I had some of my cars oiled in the past, now I get to deal with rusty bolts and lines, not to mention rust scale on the frame. My new beater will be at Schmidts soon. My '83 Honda was coated by the P.O, spent it’s whole life in Buffalo and is just finally getting to the point where it needs 2 patches welded. The rest of the underbody is perfect, and all of the bolts come off easy. Nothing is 100% guaranteed, but it’s better than just leaving it, or waiting in line for a full car wash everytime the temps are above freezing.

Just saying for most people budgeting 100 bucks for washing is better than spending it rustproofing. Like if you dont wash it whats the point of having a rust free chassis.

i dont do any underbody treatment, i go to the car wash at least twice a week though… underbody is spotless on my DD and its a 96

Gotcha.

Yes keeping the udnerbody clean is key, wheel wells and all the places that hold salt and dirty. I usualy wait till its 33 or more out and wrinse it off , all winter i dont clean it to look prety just get all the salt off. My 93 regal is mint and we have had it since new. Its seen every winter.

If you like your car, and you’re driving it through the salty season, then $100 on Scmidtts & $100 ($5 wash once or twice a week) is more then worth it.

particularly if you’re keeping it more then a few seasons.

:gotme:

I’m shooting for 12 years for the Xterra. My appointment at Schmidts is scheduled.
