Didn’t read any of the other replies, but I’m all for what they are doing. In the article, someone who was interviewed said:
“it’s unfair.”
This made me chuckle profusely,as Wegmans isn’t a non-for-profit and isn’t a democracy.
I’m sure this decision was based off of other things than morals/ethics, as they are betting their increased public image ( which was already quite high ) should pull in more customers, but will that offset their sale of tobacco? I’m uncertain, however they must be pretty sure considering it was never a consideration of other grocery stores in the area to make this decision.
Additionally, for the smokers out there, I’m curious how many actually purchase their shit from a grocery store anyways, and not a gas station / convenience store?
